About the project

This piece won first place at the Yorba-Linda Library Photography Book Cover Contest in 2010. It was my first time experimenting with Photoshop after taking a photography class. My idea was to put two different bowls adjacent to each other by representing the mother and daughter in the novel. The message of the book was clear that no matter how much the daughter want to assimilate and adopt the Western culture, she was always be Chinese. Therefore, I put the red envelope in the top bowl to represent that she's still Asian.

This work will remain the reason why I want to be a good visual storyteller. That is something I always strive for no matter work I produce. My goal is to create designs that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also meaningful and impactful - designs that can communicate a message and evoke emotions.
